Event-listener scripting, the elf in the box
Chances are that you’ve already discovered the power of scripting the Adobe applications to perform repetitive tasks, simplify complicated ones and reduce technical errors by your design and production staffers. But if your scripting tools do not include event-listeners, you may be overlooking a way to multiply that power. The event-listener does not wait for the Adobe user to remember to run it. Instead it piggybacks on the actions that a designer takes in the normal course of working: opening, saving and close documents, placing library items, copying and pasting and so on.
The Star Tribune uses dozens of event-listener scripts in InDesign and InCopy to handle a wide range of production chores. At this session, we’ll look at a few examples that might be useful to other NCS Content users. If you’re already using event-listeners, come and share your experiences. And if you haven’t jumped into Adobe scripting yet, come to get an idea of what can be done.

iPublish Media Solutions, LLC
iPublish Media Solutions, the industry leading provider or self-service solutions will be demonstrating their new AdPortal Tributes solution.  AdPortal Tributes creates a special “in Memoriam” section that is loved by funeral homes and families, easy for newspaper operations, and creates meaningful revenue. This special section is a bundled upsell for obituaries and is available to iPublish AdPortal and non-AdPortal customers through our unique partnership with Legacy.com.  For a nominal fee the family receives a memorial tribute listing in a multi-page insert of the newspaper, along with special display ad and native ad opportunities. AdPortal Tributes paginates each market’s special obituaries section as a print-ready multi page PDF or native Adobe InDesign file.

In addition iPublish will also be demonstrating Leadhax.com a AdPortal Real estate implementation offered by the Bay Area News Group.  Leadhax offers low cost packages of both programmatic and Facebook targeted ad campaigns.  Integrated with multiple MLS feeds LeadHax enables a RE agent to buy, build and book targeted ad campaigns in minutes.

Roundtable: Customer Enhancement Forum for editorial/mobile
Do you have questions about the Customer Enhancement Forum and how it works? We can go over how to enter requests and how the forum works.
Also, are there things you have asked for NCS to develop that you feel could benefit other NCS customers? Are there elements that aren't working as expected?
Bring your wish list for any editorial product.
=======
The latest from NCS: We are working our way through the CEF requests already submitted. In addition, the key deadline dates are as follows:
  • NCS Content 2018-2 – List needs to be compiled by 1/15/2018
  • NEP – List needs to be compiled by 2/15/2018
  • ONSET – Since this is rapid release, it is harder to pinpoint dates for specific versions. So I would like to see a list by 6/1/2018, and we will try to incorporate their submissions in the next release – just can’t predict what number we will be at by that point in time.
  • We are also packaging up a Maintenance Release dedicated to Lite Editor/Reporter Client that will be going to select beta customers this year. That should be GA by the first of next year. Lots or requests come in for LE/RC. So hopefully the group will see that as good news too.

Progress - Keeping Pace with Evolving User Expectations
This session reviews the industry trends that are changing and elevating users’ expectations of how they will interact with business systems. Recent technological advances have enabled new user experiences: new types of devices (Smartwatches, Smartglasses, Digital Voice Assistants…etc.), and new ways of interacting with devices (conversational voice and text interaction, augmented/virtual reality…etc.). It is also becoming increasingly expected that business applications should be smarter, or more cognitive, and to provide more actionable and relevant business insight that can drive productivity or operational efficiency. At the same time, the exploding API Economy is putting ever more pressure on businesses to streamline integration with partners and customers through modern APIs. These APIs have to meet their own type of ‘user’ expectations around metrics such as availability and response time. Progress’s ongoing analysis of these trends drives how we evolve our Application Platform to ensure it continues to address our customers’ and partners’ business application development needs, so that they, in turn, can continue to meet and exceed their business users’ evolving requirements and expectations. We’ll also present some best practice strategy, architecture and implementation recommendations relating to the opportunities these novel digital touchpoints and technologies offer to enhance business application users’ experiences. There will also be some live Augmented Reality demonstrations.

NCS - Media Myth Busters 2018 - Pete Marsh
There are a lot of myths surrounding the news media industry. It’s a media made by and aimed at old people. Older readers are dying and young people don’t like traditional news brands. Younger readers will pay for music or games, but not news. Print is dead. Talking to inanimate objects is just weird. This keynote presentation will talk about some of the most common beliefs and prevailing sentiments surrounding our industry today. We will knock each of these on the head, and hopefully you will leave this session feeling even prouder about the work you do every day.

Reducing publishing costs: How can you do it?
How can sites reduce publishing costs? Are there alternatives to Adobe apps? Digital First Media is working toward eliminating the use of InCopy; Gatehouse is using Lite Editor with plans to move to ONSET; and there’s Content Planner to help reduce InDesign licensing. European workflows include doing partial layouts using layout geometries. If there is time, we can cover other things within InDesign that can help the production process, including scripting.
